Many people don't understand this game called golf. For years, I've been surrounded by friends and family that ridicule the concept of grown-ups chasing a little white ball around the countryside and surrounding woods and environments in many communities. For some it is a waste of available land, and others it is a senseless and demoralizing sport. But, for a few of us, it is the most beautiful and most challenging experience one can have, and work at.
That's why I became a serious golfer in my retirement. After spending a career of managing other people's lives and issues, it was apparent that the game of golf was my opportunity to pursue something that managed my issues, and life moments. So, I am starting this official blog today as a journal to document my life as a serious golfer.
I have been playing golf, on and off for a number of years, first playing with my Dad and brothers, then involving my wife and some relatives, and eventually playing with my own children. But, in those times it was a once a week activity and since the climate in northeast New York was only tolerable for the sport a few months a year, golf was something I did from late April to October. In those years, I never belonged to a league, and my game suffered from amateur-itis with too much testosterone, and very little accuracy.
Upon my retirement from a career as a school administrator, my wife and I moved to Florida, and found ourselves in the midst of beautiful courses, adorned with ponds, lakes, wildlife of all kinds, and many opportunities to be a part of the game for 12 months. We eventually found ourselves in Palm Coast, FL living on a beautiful golf course designed by none other than Jack Nicklaus, who created a magnificent experience just a breeze from the ocean.
Our first attempts on this holy ground were not so remarkable, but the experience was breathtaking. Wide open fairways, bordered by stunning trees, plant and wild life, and many sand traps. This was our new home and something that I would come to appreciate through thick and thin.
Needless to say, I have taken up the experience of golfing 3 times a week, and will try to entertain you in understanding the experiences, and frustrations that make up the life of someone who pursues an avocation, such as this sport.
I am not a strong player, and currently, I have been assigned as a 27.7 handicap with the PGA Golf Association of Florida. Hopefully, this improves as a I seek to wend my way through the journey of this game. To assist you in charting my progress, my daily blogs will always have my handicap posted at the top.
Please join me in this journey, and share your thoughts with me.
